The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. During the period of a few weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his intentions for a lavish reception room twice the size than the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing to build it.

He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and presently an analysis forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no former commander would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the White House to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.

As disorienting as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the old idea about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

Hence I shall explain the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and given that the quickly increasing segment among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. The obvious and straightforward fact that Christ from scripture calls for a form of radical love focused on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Best of Us

So I have been heartened to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump arise in this past year. It has been significant comfort to assist in constructing the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the finest aspects of American history.

We will be questioned ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or refuse?
